This enzyme is essential in the biosynthesis of sterols, particularly ergosterol, in fungi. By inhibiting Lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, itraconazole inhibits ergosterol production, thereby disrupting the mycotic cell membrane synthesis. The formulation slows the growth of yeast fungi and kills fungi like Aspergillus spp. Mycotic infections occur when fungi overgrow and overcome the body’s natural defenses, often due to weakened immunity or other factors.
